Petra, Jordan – May 13, 2025
A new and innovative tourism experience has been launched in Petra, marking a significant leap in cultural and scientific tourism. The Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA), in collaboration with the Pioneers Association for Astronomical Tourism, has introduced the Archaeo-Astronomy Trail — a route designed to uncover Petra’s lesser-known legacy in science and astronomy.
The launch event, held in Petra, also saw the unveiling of a new book titled Al-Raqeem: The Nabataean Scientific Project in Petra by researcher and association president Ma’moun Al-Nawafleh. The book sheds light on the intellectual and scientific prowess of the Nabataeans, particularly in their architectural alignments and celestial knowledge.
PDTRA Chief Commissioner Dr. Fares Al-Breizat emphasized that this new initiative aligns with the Authority’s ongoing mission to diversify Petra’s tourism offerings beyond its iconic monuments. “This trail is a journey into Petra’s intellectual and astronomical heritage, revealing how the Nabataeans connected with the cosmos through their architecture,” he noted. He further highlighted the importance of integrating scientific narratives into tourism to foster sustainability and extend visitors' stays, benefiting the local economy.
Researcher Al-Nawafleh revealed that the new trail brings forward findings suggesting that the Nabataeans may have developed early navigational instruments — including what he believes to be the forerunners of the modern compass and astrolabe. He also suggested that Petra’s famous Treasury (Al-Khazneh) serves as a celestial marker, aligning with specific astronomical events throughout the year.
Adding a creative dimension to the event, Jordanian novelist Safaa Al-Hattab praised the initiative for illuminating a profound and often overlooked aspect of Petra’s identity — its intellectual legacy. She commended the collaboration between scholars and tourism authorities for crafting a richer narrative around Petra.
One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of a newly discovered meteorite fragment found in Petra. Verified by experts from Al-Hussein Bin Talal University, the meteorite adds a symbolic celestial connection to the theme of the trail, deepening its cosmic significance.
The Archaeo-Astronomy Trail now joins Petra’s diverse collection of experiential routes, including the Wadi Farasa, Khurma, Al-Madras, and Prophet Haroun trails. Together, they offer a more holistic exploration of Petra — combining history, nature, spirituality, and now, science.
PDTRA notes that this trail not only enriches the cultural tapestry of Petra for visitors but also holds great promise for local communities by driving demand for local guides, traditional crafts, and small-scale accommodations.
This initiative is a cornerstone in Petra’s long-term strategy to position itself as a global leader in cultural and scientific tourism — where ancient wisdom meets modern exploration.
