Yesterday, Friday, Jordan celebrated with the countries of the world “ World Tourism Day ,” which falls on September 27 of each year, under the slogan “ Tourism and Peace.”
Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Lina Annab said in a press statement, “The importance of this day lies in shedding light on this active and vital sector that contributes effectively and immediately to supporting the national economy and developing local communities by providing sustainable services and promoting small and medium enterprises.”
She said, “Jordan, the ‘Kingdom of Time’, has witnessed civilizations spanning 14,000 years, where the first loaf of bread was discovered, and the statues of Ain Ghazal nine thousand years ago, passing through the Ammonites, Edomites, Greeks, Nabataeans, Romans, Byzantines, and the civilization of the Islamic state until the present day.”
Annab explained that “Jordan has 100,000 archaeological sites, 16,000 of which are registered on the national register and 7 sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List, including Petra, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. We also have 5 sites recognized by the Vatican for Christian pilgrimage, which makes Jordan one of the most important tourist countries in the region, if not the entire world, in addition to the reputation of security, safety and exceptional hospitality enjoyed by Jordan and its people.”
She stressed that the great diversity witnessed by the Jordanian tourism sector also makes it a major destination not only for cultural and historical tourism, but also for medical and adventure tourism. The Jordan Trail is one of the top 10 sites for adventure tourism according to the National Geographic World Ranking, in addition to medical tourism , especially in the Dead Sea, which is the largest natural site for medical and wellness tourism in the world, not to mention beach and diving tourism in Aqaba, in addition to 850 local tourism experiences throughout the Kingdom.
The Ministry worked to enhance cooperation with China by organizing a trip to China and receiving Chinese tourists in the Kingdom, stressing the Kingdom's support for the Global Civilization Initiative launched by China in 2023 to enhance dialogue between different civilizations and advance the common prosperity of different civilizations.
On the cultural level, “the archaeological site of Umm al-Jimal was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2024, adding to the list of Jordan’s six other heritage sites, which include Petra, Qusayr Amra, Umm ar-Rasas, Wadi Rum, al-Maghtas, and al-Salt. This inscription reflects the effective coordination between national institutions and the ongoing efforts to preserve heritage of all kinds.”
The Ministry stressed that these achievements contribute to enhancing Jordan's position on the global tourism map , and reflect the Ministry's commitment to achieving sustainable development and revitalizing the national economy.
