A distinguished delegation from the NATO Partnership Committee visited the ancient city of Petra to assess the impact of regional instability on Jordan's tourism sector. During their visit, the delegation held a meeting with Dr. Fares Braizat, Chief Commissioner of the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA).
Dr. Braizat presented a detailed briefing on the current state of tourism in Petra, emphasizing the challenges caused by ongoing regional security concerns. He noted that Petra depends largely on visitors from European and North American markets, which have seen a decline due to the perception of instability in the region.
He highlighted how the drop in tourist numbers has created economic hardship both nationally and at the local level, particularly for communities whose livelihoods depend on the tourism industry.
Dr. Braizat called for greater collaboration, both locally and internationally, to reinforce Petra’s image as a safe and stable destination. He also emphasized the vital role that NATO member states can play in supporting Jordan's efforts to restore confidence in the region’s tourism potential.
The NATO delegation reaffirmed the importance of regional security and stability as essential foundations for sustainable economic development, especially for communities reliant on tourism.
This visit aligns with broader efforts led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates and other national institutions to deepen Jordan-NATO cooperation, with the goal of strengthening bilateral ties and promoting economic resilience and regional peace.
