After breakfast, begin an unforgettable full-day visit to Petra, the ancient Nabataean capital and Jordan’s most celebrated archaeological treasure. Enter through the main visitor gate and follow the pathway through Bab Al-Siq, passing the Obelisk Tomb and other early monuments carved into the surrounding rock.
Continue through the narrow, winding Siq, a natural sandstone gorge that once formed the ceremonial entrance to the city. Along the way, observe remnants of Nabataean water channels, ceramic pipes, religious niches and carved figures that demonstrate the engineering and artistic achievements of Petra’s inhabitants.
At the end of the Siq, the magnificent Treasury, Al-Khazneh, gradually comes into view. Take time to appreciate its detailed rock-cut façade and learn about its history before continuing deeper into the archaeological site.
Walk along the Street of Façades towards the Nabataean Theatre and view the monumental Royal Tombs, including the Urn Tomb, Silk Tomb, Corinthian Tomb and Palace Tomb. Continue through the ancient city centre along the Colonnaded Street, passing major monuments such as the Great Temple, the Byzantine Church, the Temenos Gate and Qasr Al-Bint.
Travellers with good physical fitness may continue along the mountain path to Ad-Deir, the Monastery. The route involves approximately 800 rock-cut steps, but the impressive monument and extensive views across the surrounding mountains make the climb a rewarding experience.
After exploring Petra, return along the same principal route through the ancient city and the Siq to the visitor centre. The exact duration and distance covered can be adapted to your interests, available time and preferred walking level.
