Begin your adventure at the Petra Visitor Center and follow the entrance route toward the archaeological site, passing the impressive Djinn Blocks and Obelisk Tomb. Rather than continuing directly through the Siq along Petra's classical Main Trail, leave the main route and begin your ascent along the Al-Madras Trail.
This ancient Nabataean route leads into the mountains above Petra and provides a quieter and more adventurous introduction to the archaeological site. As you gradually gain elevation, the busy entrance route gives way to rugged sandstone scenery, ancient pathways and impressive views across Petra's mountainous landscape.
Continue along the Al-Madras route through Petra's dramatic sandstone terrain toward one of the major highlights of the hike: an elevated viewpoint overlooking the Treasury area.
From this elevated position, enjoy a remarkable perspective across Petra's mountain landscape and toward the Treasury from above. It provides an excellent opportunity for panoramic photography and allows you to appreciate the extraordinary natural setting in which the Nabataeans created their ancient city.
Later in the day you will encounter the Treasury again from ground level, giving this itinerary two very different perspectives of Petra's most famous monument.
Continue through the mountains toward Jabal Al-Madhbah and the legendary High Place of Sacrifice, one of Petra's most important ancient ceremonial sites. The trail involves further climbing along historic rock-cut paths and steps before reaching the summit.
At the top, explore the ancient Nabataean ceremonial area and enjoy some of Petra's most impressive panoramic views from above. From this elevated position, Petra's valleys, sandstone mountains and archaeological landscape unfold below, offering a completely different perspective from the monuments experienced at ground level.
This is one of the principal scenic highlights of the hike and an excellent place to appreciate the scale, geography and extraordinary setting of the ancient Nabataean capital.
Rather than returning along the same path, descend from the High Place through the beautiful Wadi Farasa. This lesser-visited route reveals another side of Petra and transforms the experience into an exciting circuit rather than a simple out-and-back trail.
During the descent, discover fascinating Nabataean monuments hidden among the mountains, including the Lion Fountain, Garden Temple area, Roman Soldier Tomb and Renaissance Tomb.
The trail continues gradually downward through spectacular sandstone scenery before reaching Qasr Al-Bint and Petra's ancient city centre.
From the Qasr Al-Bint and Basin area, begin the day's next major ascent toward Ad-Deir – the Monastery.
The historic mountain trail climbs through Petra's rugged landscape via hundreds of ancient stone steps. Along the way, enjoy changing views of the surrounding valleys and sandstone mountains before the monumental façade of Ad-Deir finally comes into view.
Carved directly into the mountain, the Monastery is one of Petra's largest and most impressive monuments and provides a spectacular reward after the demanding climb.
Allow approximately 15–20 minutes at the Monastery for photographs, explanation and a well-earned rest. Travelers who remain energetic and have sufficient time may also walk toward one of the nearby elevated viewpoints for additional views across the surrounding mountain landscape.
After enjoying Ad-Deir and its dramatic surroundings, descend along the same historic mountain trail toward the Basin and Qasr Al-Bint.
The downhill journey provides another opportunity to admire Petra's rugged scenery before returning to the archaeological heart of the ancient city. A short rest can be taken in the Basin area before beginning the final section of the journey back toward the Visitor Center.
Continue through the centre of ancient Petra along the classical archaeological route. This section offers a fascinating contrast to the remote mountain trails experienced earlier in the day.

Take time to appreciate the remains of Petra's once-thriving city centre and the magnificent façades of the Royal Tombs before continuing toward the Theatre and Street of Facades.
Continue past the Nabataean Theatre and along the Street of Facades toward Petra's most celebrated monument, Al-Khazneh – the Treasury.
This is one of the most rewarding moments of the itinerary. Earlier in the day, you experienced the Treasury landscape from an elevated mountain viewpoint; now you can stand directly in front of its magnificent rock-cut façade and admire it from the classical ground-level perspective.
Two Treasury Experiences in One Hike:
Experience the Treasury from an elevated viewpoint during the Al-Madras section, followed later by the iconic ground-level view directly in front of Al-Khazneh.
Allow approximately 10–15 minutes at the Treasury for photographs and explanation before beginning the final walk through the Siq.
Complete the adventure by walking through the magnificent Siq, Petra's famous narrow sandstone gorge. Surrounded by towering rock walls, ancient Nabataean water channels and extraordinary natural colors and formations, the Siq provides a spectacular conclusion to the day's hike.
Continue through Bab Al-Siq, passing the Obelisk Tomb and Djinn Blocks once again before arriving back at the Petra Visitor Center.
